Plug it in, turn on the toggle switch in the cord, and place the wax, tart, or oil of your choice in the tray at the top. The tray is removable so you can place a jar candle on the 4-diameter warming base instead. The base also makes a great mug warmer! The size of the warmer without a tray is 4-3/4 x 4-3/4 x 2-1/2 high. The tray is 5-1/8 x 5-1/8 at the top and 1-1/8 high on/off indicator light on the back side of the base.
